Workshop Description:  Whether an experienced artist or earnest hobbyist, most creative people struggle with the same blocks in sitting down to create or finishing projects.  Hindrances like overwhelm, fear of failure, procrastination, perfectionism, and boredom are endemic to the creative process, but fortunately, wisdom traditions offer a wealth of insights into working with these hindrances.  In this hands-on workshop for hindered visual artists and writers, contemplative educator and teaching artist Mitchell Bowman will work with participants to explore how essential mindfulness practices and the tradition of Tibetan wisdom energies can provide a practical toolkit for working with hindrances and expanding one’s creative potential.

Creative Action Facilitator:  Mitchell Bowman, M.A.Ed., is the Director of Out-of-School Time Programs for Creative Action in Austin, TX and the creator of Social Creativity, a contemplative arts program for youth with special needs.  He has been working with youth and educators as a multi-disciplinary teaching artist and instructor for 8 years.  Mitchell is also a musician, filmmaker, creativity coach, mindfulness guide, and lecturer with experience leading professional development for artists, teachers, and administrators.  He has presented original workshops and seminars to Austin ISD, Round Rock ISD, ReadyBy21, Central Texas Afterschool Network, the National Guild for Community Arts Education, and for community organizations within Central Texas.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Media/Film from Ohio University in 2004 and his Masters in Contemplative Education from Naropa University in 2017. Mitchell is currently developing a book and contemplative game based on his graduate research on mindfulness and the creative process.
